Board game detective style family!
Cluedo, listening to the game, you can guess what genre it is. You must be a detective, murder, solve this and that. But what you don’t expect is how it leads us into the maze of a jungle of clues, with gameplay that combines turn-based Board games and strangely engaging puzzle interactions. To be honest, I’ve played a lot of puzzle games before, but combined with turn-based cards like this and with an interactive story type, I encountered it for the first time.
Background
You will start your game by transforming into one of 6 available characters: Miss Scarlet, Colonel Mustard, Mrs Peacock, Mr Green, Dr Orchid and Professor Plum. They will all be in a mysterious Tudor Mansion. Here, on a dark and gloomy night, a mass murder happened.
The first victim was Mr. Boddy. This elderly noble man was murdered. No one knows what happened, who is the killer, and for what reason. Just know that the culprit is still lurking somewhere in this large building. And he will kill many more people if he doesn’t quickly find out his true identity and unmask him in the crowd.
As of now writing this article, I haven’t reached the end of the game yet, just trying to find the culprit, but I still don’t know if there’s really another twist. Another motivation for you to download the game to play is: no matter who you transform into, that person (and the rest of the family characters) has a secret that you want to keep. When the crime is exposed, I can be 100% sure that all those embarrassing secrets will be exposed as well. That is also the reason you will be spinning like a pinwheel while playing the game. Everyone has something to hide and everyone has a part of the lie.
Gameplay
Cluedo is a classic mystery game. Combination of two genres: Puzzle and Family Board game. The cards will turn around 3 elements: Who, What Weapon, Where. Each situation that appears, you will have to choose one of these cards and take your turn to unravel the secrets surrounding the story, finding the clues needed to reach the final conclusion. The only mission that follows the whole process is to find the real culprit behind this gruesome murder.
To uncover this great mystery, you will have to collect as many clues as possible. They are not in any order, both in space and in time. So even if you already have a lot of indirect or indirect evidence, you are still forced to brainstorm constantly to connect facts, clues together and find the logic behind everything. Big family secrets, long-standing feuds and killing methods are also gradually revealed.
Your turn is decided by a roll of the dice. The dice roll, the number of points on it corresponds to the location of a room that you are allowed to move to in the mansion to find the clues. At each step you go, you will see an event, receive a question and receive a card with one of 3 hints about Who, What Weapon and Where.
If the situation is too difficult, you can use the game’s Hint Table feature. This is a detail I appreciate about Cluedo. Not everyone can absorb this hybrid game genre, and if you play this board game with your family, each member’s experience will be completely different. The hint table will be very beneficial to open up the logic behind the clues, helping players focus on the right points to exploit instead of going around in the wrong spots. Thereby shortening the sensing distance with the members who are playing with.
The character creation in Cluedo is quite good, the 2D image, the scene of the mansion appears to be both generous and mysterious, sometimes making you shiver because of its artificial luxury. In general, the graphics are just average, not very impressive. Just focus on the story progression and gameplay.
